An LYS Exclusive
We are so excited to be participating in Kim Dyes Yarn's Community Matters Series!

How it works:

  • There are no minimums or limits to how many skeins you can order. Order one colorway or both!
  • Place your order by the last day of the month. These colors will not be available after that.
  • Skeins are custom dyed for you and will be available to you around the middle of the following month.
  • Order by phone (804) 362-7800 or online at

Rainbow Beach + Appia Cowl

Looking for a fun (and can we say addictive?!?) new knitting project to cast on?

Then check out the Appia Cowl pattern by Hilary Smith Callis.

Appia is a lacey, light cowl-shawl hybrid - shaped like a semi-circular shawl - but worked partially in the round so it can be worn as a cowl without any dangling ends that slide off your shoulders.

There’s texture, there’s lace, and we promise it is easy-easy-easy! If you can work the knit stitch, the purl stitch, yarn-overs, and knit-two-together you can easily knit the Appia cowl.

And wow, have we found the perfect yarn for your Appia cowl - Rainbow Beach by Queensland Collection. Each skein has such amazing gradient color shifts - some are bold like the one here in the color-way “Sunset”, and others a little more subtle in their color changes. THIS is the addictive part of knitting the Appia Cowl - you just have to knit a few more rows to see the next color change!

Available in two sizes, the size small Appia Cowl can be knit with just ONE skein of Rainbow Beach, but you might want to have a second skein on hand if you knit the size large. Sandy knit the large size pictured here with one skein - but skipped a few rounds of the pattern near the end to have enough yarn left for the picot binding. If you do purchase a second skein - you will have MORE than enough left over to knit another Appia cowl in the size small - so one for yourself and one to gift to a friend or family member!

And stay tuned, Sandy already has a SECOND Appia Cowl on her needles right now and is testing/experimenting a few minor pattern modifications on how to knit a medium-sized Appia Cowl that will use just one skein of Rainbow Beach...
