Strategies for managing your fiber supply, maintaining an even yarn consistency, and spinning with a specific project in mind
I started knitting as a teenager: I learned the basic knit and purl techniques from my aunt and was soon clacking away at scarves and hats, improvising designs and knitting gifts for loved ones from an ever-growing stash of yarn. Over the years, as I sharpened my knitting skills, I began paying more attention to the yarn itself, with an eye for weight, color, and fiber content. Then, after completing graduate degrees in English and creative writing, I decided to try spinning my own yarn, which has opened a whole other world to me and forever changed how I look at yarn and how I knit with it.
Like many teachers, I see myself as a lifelong learner. I enjoy picking up new skills, trying new techniques, and expanding my horizons. I also enjoy sharing these discoveries with others. The process of hand-spinning yarn can be very technical (for those who want to fine-tune their yarn to certain specifications), but it can also be meditative?and fun! My goals in a hand-spinning class are to demystify the process of making yarn (by walking students through each step, and by explaining both the how and the why), to create a welcoming space where students of all skills levels can learn together, and to empower students to make informed decisions about where they want to go next.
