Masterclass: The Ziggurat Method — The Ultimate Seamless Sweater Workshop

If you aren’t already familiar with Åsa Tricosa’s Ziggurat Method of sweater construction, prepare to discover one of the most fascinating approaches to garment knitting available today. This highly technical, deeply engaging method will be explored in detail over 12 sessions and more than 24 hours of intensive instruction and mentoring.

The resulting sweater features remarkable details such as folded finished hems, lined pockets, and polished tailoring, all while being celebrated for its exceptional fit and seamless construction.

The best time to knit a sweater? Right now. By sweater weather, you’ll have a beautifully fitted handmade garment ready to wear.

The Ziggurat Method is renowned for its ingenious top-down construction, building the shoulders, sleeve caps, neck shaping, and body simultaneously in one continuous piece with absolutely no seaming. It looks like magic—but it requires precision.

In this comprehensive, masterclass-style workshop, you’ll be guided step-by-step through the entire process over 12 tightly focused sessions. We begin with consecutive weekly classes to conquer the technical “yoke puzzle,” then transition to bi-weekly and three-week intervals, giving you plenty of time to knit the body and sleeves between sessions.

What We Will Cover:
• How to navigate and read the specialized Ziggurat pattern tables
• Flawless short rows for tailored shoulder shaping
• Creating built-in, uninterrupted “faux seams” for structural integrity
• Picking up stitches cleanly without gaps or holes
• Customizing fit as you knit
• Specialized shaping techniques including bust darts and waist shaping
• Elegant finishing techniques, including the signature Ziggurat lined hem
• Creating integrated pockets

What We Will Do:
• Knit a gorgeous sweater
• Have lots of fiber fun

Materials:
Book: Ziggurats by Asa Tricosa - available for purchase at Center of the Yarniverse (the book comes with a Ravelry code so you can have both a physical and digital version of the book!)

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (Cascade 220 suggested) in the amount needed for estimated finished size, in 2 colors if you want to match the sample pictured. Please note, the instructor is excluding the decorative line on the sleeve.

Needles: US 6 or size to meet gauge and another 3 sizes smaller than body needle.  This is a good project for interchangeable needles, but they are not required.

Notions: Special beginning of the round marker, various other stitch markers, measuring tape, stitch holders/barber cords, scissors and tapestry needle.

Note: This is an intermediate- to advanced-level project and is not intended for beginners. Students should be comfortable reading their stitches and managing knitting instructions. This could absolutely be your first sweater—but it should not be your first major knitting project. Any questions about whether this is the right fit for you, Jenna, the instructor is at the shop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to answer questions – call or pop in.

This is your sign to invest in yourself, deepen your technical skills, and create a truly extraordinary sweater.

Prior to the first session, no homework except to have at least one skein wound and ready to go with your needles.

A minimum of 4 students is required for the class to run.
If you're interested but think you might miss a few sessions, the instructor can provide a recording— 48 hours' advanced notice is appreciated.
Please note: the first two sessions are especially important, so try your best to attend them live.
